Follow up email after job interview, good idea?

I recently had a job interview and really dont know how well it went, but more positive than negative. I was wondering if just sending a follow up emil to my interviewer just stating, thank you for your time and that I look forward from hearing from you yady yada typa thing. would this be a good idea and if so what would be a positive/non desperate way of putting a letter? -thank you!
